History
- Hi8 video is a format that belongs to a category of formats called 8mm video. 8mm video was invented in the 1980's by kodak as a competitor to VHS.
- Just like VHS, the technology used magnetic tape encased in a plastic shell to contain videos.
- 8mm video had use in the professional markets but was mainly used for home use. After the invention of video8 (the first 8mm video format), Hi8 (high-band video8) was invented. It was made as an improvement to the current video8 technology and as a response to improvements in the VHS competition (who had just launched super-vhs).
- By the early 2000's digital cameras had mostly taken over and 8mm video was rendered obsolete.
Downsides to Hi8
- Hi8 video is an analogue technology as opposed to the digital formats used today.
- In this case, this means that the information is stored magnetically as opposed to using 1's and 0's. Because of this, the information contained within the tape can be damaged over time, unlike with digital formats.
- The solution is to have your tapes converted to a digital format. This will stop them from decaying and degrading any further and will allow you to watch at your own convenience on many devices!

You should be able to watch the Hi8 to digital converted files on pretty much anything! You can watch them with ease on your computer by just selecting the file. Afterwards you can copy the video onto a tablet or cell phone to watch them on those devices. You can even play them on a television if you have one that has a USB port.
We recommend that once you have the files on your system you make copies of them, mitigating the chances of losing the files because of Hard Drive corruption. This means that you can share your files with your friends and family as much as you want!
What format will my Hi8 to digital tapes be
We convert Hi8 tapes to MP4 (the universal standard). This will allow you to play your videos on most devices. We normally convert the tapes to MP4 but we also offer other well-known formats including avi , mpeg, quick time , and mov.
